Experts in Arctic shipping, Fednav has been operating in the Canadian Arctic for over 50 years. An associated company since 1976, Canarctic joined Fednav in 1996 and is the owner and operator of MV Arctic and Umiak I, icebreakers powerful enough to navigate unescorted through ice-covered water. Together, they have participated in every major shipping project in the Canadian Arctic and are proud of the innovative and effective solutions that they have helped develop in the region.
The Canadian Arctic has always posed a unique challenge to transportation. The harsh environment - cold and unforgiving, yet pristine and fragile - presents opportunities as well as obstacles and is one that requires a very particular approach and careful planning by the navigator.
Built in 2006, MV Umiak I, a 31,500-tonne icebreaking bulk carrier, the most powerful ever of its kind, is employed in moving 360,000 tonnes of nickel concentrates a year in 12 voyages from Inco Ltd.'s Voisey's Bay mine in northern Labrador to its smelters in Sudbury, Ontario and Thompson, Manitoba.
